STRIVING FOR DIET PERFECTION

When we lose twenty pounds... we may be losing the twenty best pounds we have! We may be losing the pounds that contain our genius, our humanity, our love and honesty. ~Woody Allen

diet perfection

Has diet perfection ever been your goal? You know, where you start a diet and are determined to follow it absolutely 100% perfectly, no matter how much willpower it takes, or how much personality it robs you of?

And the first day it doesn't seem so difficult but then, a little ways down the road - suddenly that 100/100 diet perfection plan suddenly seems to be a lot more difficult to follow?

Well here's why: human beings aren't machines that you can program to operate day in and day out with zero defect. We're designed to be flexible and to go more with the flow of life than trying to ridgidly stick on one path.

That's why I think that diet perfection can do us more harm than good. Want to know what I suggest works much better instead?

diet perfection

Follow the 80/80 rule. Whatever you decide to try, strive only to follow 80% of the suggested guidelines, 80% of the time. Now, I can only imagine how you might find yourself protesting that idea. We've been conned into believing that if we don't strive for 100% perfection 100% of the time, it's a cop out. It's not - it's living within the realm of what is humanly possible.

That way, when you do eat something you wish you hadn't, instead of beating yourself up, you can relax knowing it's only a part of your 20% allowable imperfection quota. That stops you from catastrophizing, getting frantic and over-reacting to one tiny slip-up which then easily becomes a major deviation instead of something you just let go.

I know it sounds like an upside down way of tackling things! But the real mistake is striving for diet perfection which cannot last. Why not take the time to share your story about the times you've done the perfect diet only to have it fail.

The Green Eating Guide

I am a university-bound teenager from the United States. Two years ago I was diagnosed with anorexia, a battle that eventually found me in the hospital.Dieting has robbed me of too much time. I found this website by chance. I've spent a lot of time browsing through articles and reading stories. It has changed my attitude and made me want to be MY ideal weight, not someone else's. Thank you to all the contributors and readers of Mind over Fatter. I deeply appreciate everything you do.(abridged by Cari)

It's easy in our society today to feel that our value is determined by the number on the scale. I am encouraged to change my mind so I can love myself for who I am not how much I weigh. Thank you so much for your website. It is such an inspiration to me!
