Your Body Matters

When it comes to body matters - do you 'rent' or 'own your body? And how will you treat it this Christmas -as a renter, a squatter or an owner?

On a recent trip to Florida we hired a rental car. Given that its mileage clock told me it was new - I was surprised to note that the upholstery was already stained and marked. Bottom line, we don't look after rental cars as well as we do their own. Why? Well we're not invested in how long 'their' car is going to last.

It made me think a lot about the difference between 'renting' vs 'owning' which then lead to me thinking about the difference between how we go about our body matters when we consider our bodies a mere 'rental' instead of 'our own personal property.' How many of us don't treat our bodies as just something to haul the brain about, or to just get us through each day, or as something to over-fill at the Christmas table?

So let's say the body sends my brain an 'I'm hungry' message - if I think of my body as a rental, well it's easy to grab for whatever junk is available and scarf it down without thinking about how this will affect the long-term mileage of my body. It doesn't matter if I fill my tank with the 'dirty' fuel. It won't matter is I overeat so much Christmas fare that I feel off colour.

'If you can't be a good example -- then you'll just have to be a horrible warning. 

Sometimes, we treat our body almost as if our body matters not one bit - at least not in the long run. If we treated it as our own personal property, wouldn't we take care to look after it as best possible? Give it quality fuels, make sure we take it for a run (a walk or anything else will do too) to keep that battery energized? Wouldn't we be selective about eating for it's long term well-being beyond just this Christmas meal? Your body matters - it's the only one you've got in this lifetime!

I'm really proud of how the Ditch Diets Website continues to grow. Checking my stats at the end of our first year anniversary was like opening my own Christmas present. In November 2008 we had over 20 000 pages read and our Alexa ranking went down to below 200 000 and our homepage scored a Google ranking of 3. I can't say I really understand what these all mean, but I'm told they're all good. It's a body of work that really matters to me.
